Tangible Mathematics
Coming Soon!
Hands on. Imaginative. Sequential.
Making math enjoyable for young children.
Overview
CogniTwigs offers a new math program called Tangible Mathematics, which is based on the Gattengo Mathematics.
Tangible Mathematics brings Gattegno to life, providing a sequential, imaginative program that even 3 year olds can begin. Beginning with free play with Cuisenaire rods, it provides a sequential, leveled activities that build young children’s intuition of mathematical concepts. As the levels progress, they include group play and individual play structures, that engage the students thinking strategies and cognitive development, providing a framework for child-centred learning. The fundamental features are listed below:
The Feature Highlights
Heuristic Approach
This program encourages children to notice, wonder and discover to gain mathematical understanding. It provides tools and opportunities for them to not only problem solve but to create problems of their own, by experimenting, predicting and evaluating all possible solutions. Engaging natural curiosity is the basis of learning.

Tangible Approach
Using Cuisenaire Rods engages kinesthetic learning styles as children experience tactile activities. This allows them to gain understanding of very abstract concepts, such as algebra, with ease.
Begins With Algebra
Developing an understanding of algebra and how all the parts of mathematics relate to each other, is essential for children in order for them to comprehend what is happening in math. This approach gives the children meaning right from the get-go and builds on previous knowledge and understanding.
Child Centred
This approach is all about the learner and their thinking. As adults, the more we understand where the children are at in their thinking the more we can find the gaps and holes in their understanding. This then, empowers us to be more effective with the activities we choose to develop their understanding.

Develops Cognitive Skills
Tangible Mathematics unlocks ways for children to practice their cognitive skills by intentionally asking questions in a way that allows children to think about their own thinking. This engages meta-cognition, which allows long term improvement to thinking strategies.
Sequential
Sequential activities ensures that all learning is based on prior knowledge and able to be connected to earlier activities. This develops efficiency when learning and engages connections to be made to strengthen long-term memory of concepts learnt.

Tangible Mathematics methodology has been developed through integration of three amazing methodologies, Feuerstein – Spalding – Gattegno. These three offer so much insight to the way children learn and this program incorporates all three approaches to learning.

Learning Well At Home
Sonya Post, the creator of Learning Well At Home, has developed some excellent courses for learning math with Cuisenaire rods based on Gattegno’s work. These courses are great for ironing out our math issues while allowing us to keep teaching our children. They are essential for developing an understanding of the mathematical concepts and how the rods relate. Her courses also includes worksheets and activities.
